There are a number of orthoses we provide for wrist management. We use a combination of prefabricated and custom made orthoses depending a number of factors such as: joint alignment/ deformity, working conditions and degree of instability.
Carpel tunnel syndrome is one of the most common conditions we see and are often managed via a prefab wrist orthosis initially as the condition usually does not present with any type of joint deformity. The goal of the orthosis is to simply hold the wrist in a neutral alignment minimizing the compression of the flexor tendons onto the median nerve traveling through the carpel tunnel. The wrist stabilized in this position minimizes the nerve compression and can often decrease the symptomatic pain.
We are also here to call upon to produce a more custom fit wrist hand orthosis from a high temperature plastic which is much more durable than the neoprene based prefab orthoses. For his type of orthosis we would do a full assessment and casting to create a mold which will be the start point for custom manufacture.
